No matter your profession, it is important to prioritize eye health in the workplace.

In our digital age, many of us work and spend our free time in front of some type of screen. Prolonged screen use can cause eye strain, dry eyes and tension headaches. If your work environment consists of sitting in front of a computer or other type of screen, try to be conscious of how often you blink. Make it a habit of looking away from your screen every 20 minutes and blink to wet your eyes.

Other professions are not immune to workplace eye injuries. They are more common than you think–almost 2,000 job-related eye injuries occur every day! Most of these eye injuries could have been prevented with protective eyewear.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease. In Tennessee, it is transmitted by the black-legged or deer tick. The most common symptom of Lyme disease is a red rash with a bullseye appearance. Usually accompanying the rash are flu-like symptoms.

What isn’t normally discussed is the effect Lyme disease has on the eyes. Lyme disease can cause inflammation throughout the entire body–including the optic nerve. Optic nerve inflammation can cause vision loss, blurred vision and eye pain. Your risk of Lyme disease in Tennessee increases in March and is at its peak from June to August. Even in the winter months, taking precautions against contracting Lyme disease is important as it can affect the entire body.
